With Divine Sight, Arjuna Sees the Universe in Krishna’s Body – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 11, Vs 7 – 8

Young Krishna opens his mouth to show the universe in his body to his nursemaid.
Young Krishna shows his nursemaid the universe in his body.

The Power of God in You

You live in a universe of your own: your body.

The Cosmic Form is God

In this dialogue between Lord Krishna and his devotee and childhood friend, Arjuna, Lord Krishna shows him the entire universe within His own body and gives Arjuna the power of Divine Sight in order to be able to see it.

7
Now see all at once, Arjuna, the entire universe in this My body, of everything moving and non-moving, and whatever else you wish to see.

8
But with your physical eyes you will not be able to see Me, so I give you Divine Sight. Behold My majestic Yoga Power!

After showing Arjuna the various forms and gods as Himself (ch 10, vs 21), He shows Arjuna the entire universe in His own body and says, “and whatever else you wish to see.”

Inside His Body? And inside your own body. As above, so below. That there is a correlation between the cosmos and human bodies is not a new concept. It is said that there as many cells in your brain as there are stars in the universe.

Now what does he mean by that? We can probably assume that there is more than one answer: There is so much to see that Arjuna can decide for himself what he will look at. Also, within the Cosmic Form of God, whatever Arjuna wants to see is what he will see, because anything he can think of is already there—not because he is manifesting anything, but because it already exists.

Imagine that you and Krishna are sitting together and having a conversation. You have heard Him say things you have wanted to know about, and He has initiated you into these mysteries after telling you previously, in so many words, to get off your duff and get with the program.

Now you have come to realize that this friend is more than just a friend (and a friend is a wonderful thing indeed!), but someone who is truly Great. And maybe…just maybe…He really is a Divine Being and you just hadn’t realized it before.

You have been sitting here, two human beings having a chat, and Krishna has said that He is everywhere in everything, and is the origin and dissolution of the universe as well, and refers to His Yoga Power. Being pretty smart yourself, you think, “Well, if He can do all that, He can somehow let me see it.” So you ask to see His true form. What you get is a big surprise: Sitting there, you see everything in his body, and you are using the Divine Sight He has given you in order to do it.

Wow.

You are overwhelmed but inspired and high as a kite, and you think about sharing this marvelous experience with your pals. Now, if you go out and tell your friends about this, what do you think they will say? Do you think they will believe you? Well, of course not. You were only dreaming, or having some kind of hallucination, or you have finally crossed the line into insanity…..or, What have you been smoking?!

What you now know to be Real seems impossible, but it really did happen. You know this with certainty. It was not your mind on a fantasy vacation, it was not a dream or a daydream or a self-deceptive invention. It was Real, and now you are questioning the reality of this very world that you (and everyone else) have always considered Reality. You are forever changed by this experience and you will never be the same again.

Now you are concerned about your life because you don’t fit into it anymore, and you’re going to have to play-act your way through things, and through relationships with other people who haven’t seen what you have seen. You can’t un-know what you know, but knowing can make you into a lone cowboy, and you’re going to have to change some things in your life.

What will you do? Will you try to talk yourself out of what has happened to you? I will tell you now that if you try this, it will not work. When a truly genuine experience like this happens, this tactic is useless. You will never forget what happened to you no matter what you do. Sooner or later, you will give in to it, give in to God/Truth, and become a yogi or the equivalent.

When you do “get off your duff and get with the program” you will lament the time you lost trying to fit in with everyone else…..

I just read over this and realized that no one really wants to hear this. No one really wants this to happen to them. They want “experiences”, yes, but only phenomena that will be exciting and make them feel more advanced spiritually, and maybe even inspired. But nothing like this! They have adapted to the familiar and they don’t want to rock the boat. Most folks only get with the God/Truth agenda if it agrees with their own, and it never will. So they create religions instead.

“Most folks only get with the God/Truth agenda if it agrees with their own, and it never will. So they create religions instead.” This post, like all the other ones, offer so many gems of wisdom, but the line I copied and pasted literally produced an audible reaction from me (at work) WOW!!! I have wrestled immensely with this very thought shackle in times past. As you stated, it is beyond the mind’s own capabilities to con itself once it has been endued with a Truth/GOD encounter. An experience with TRUTH leaves such an impact that our very own minds cannot deny or undo it! And the fruit of an encounter transports its recipients from a theoretical orientation of the Truth/GOD to empirically based realizations of IT. Wonderfully written and powerfully received.
