Previously:
Even though he performs many actions, he is surrendered to Me, thus attaining the realm of the eternal Imperishable Abode, by My Grace. — Verse 56

Relying on this Knowledge of Yoga, surrender all actions to Me. With Me as the Highest, and always thinking of Me, you will always be absorbed in Me.

“Always thinking of Me”: The word for ‘thinking’ is from the Sanskrit, chitta. Chitta is the stuff the mind is made of — pure consciousness. At this point your consciousness is purified and you begin to think of God all the time.

“Relying on this Knowledge of Yoga” suggests that even merely through rational intelligence (buddhi), one can hold God as the Highest goal, surrender all actions to God, and be absorbed into God (yoga). The teachings given in this Gita have shown us what we must do to reach this point. Now that we are here, it is only natural that we rely on this knowledge of Yoga, because we know it works. 

“With Me as the Highest” means with God as the highest goal. God is Krishna, who is Purushottama, Absolute God, and this is That to which we aspire.

“Surrender all actions to Me” By knowing that all actions are not your own, but are merely Nature in action, you easily and gladly leave everything to God/Truth. 

“You will always be absorbed in Me” Because your consciousness is always absorbed in Krishna, it is always absorbed in God, and your state is the same as That.

Thus always conscious of Me, you will overcome all obstacles by My Grace. But if out of ego (ahamkara) you do not listen, you will perish.

Krishna and Radha“You will overcome all obstacles by My Grace,” means that all obstacles encountered are now God’s to deal with. That God deals with them, is God’s Grace. This is not an action of God’s any more than it is yours, but it is God’s grace, God’s kind benevolence.

The overcoming of obstacles is a matter of getting in sync with God/Truth, so you might say that God/Truth approves and Grace is the result. You don’t deal with obstacles because your state is one in which you are not a doer of actions. So even when it may look like you are involved in an action for the purpose of eliminating an obstacle, it is God’s Grace at work, not you.

God approves and Grace ensues.

“But if out of ego you do not listen, you will perish.” The doer-ego is your nemesis. It will try to take the credit or the blame for any action, however great or small, whether for good or ill. Attending to this will get you nowhere and stop your progress. Then when you leave your body at death, you will find yourself waiting in line for a return performance. You will not achieve that realm of the Eternal. 

  • Ego (ahamkara) – believing that you are the doer of actions.

If you resort to ego and rationalize, “I shall not fight,” your resolve will be in vain, for your own nature will compel you.

This is where this Gita began: with Arjuna becoming reluctant, and then adamant, about not fighting this war to regain his rightful place of rulership of his own kingdom … because family and friends might get hurt or go away. And indeed this is something that will come up for any sincere seeker — friends and family will criticize you, call you crazy, accuse you of being selfish and indulgent and hurting them (you’re not; you are actually helping them but they can’t see it). 

During this chapter we found that, although Arjuna was in disagreement with Lord Krishna who had urged him to take up this challenge, all his complaints revealed to us that he was already in possession of True Knowledge without realizing it.

This is like most of us. Every one our reasons for not going forward are loaded with messages suggesting the very opposite of what is being taught in this Gita. We resist these teachings with innumerable and perfectly rational excuses. Then things start coming up that make it impossible for us to go forward with it. 

Once you awaken to your Inherent Knowing, you will realize that these teachings are True. You will notice that they feel somehow familiar to you, and you will stop resisting. At this point you will let go of your concerns about friends, family and society in general, and you will get on with finding your guru and moving forward … no matter what. It is inevitable, “for your own nature will compel you.”

You already know everything. You have but to learn what you know.

Knowledge, Action and the Gunas – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 18, Vs 17

Swami Kripalu – Spontaneous Action in Surrender to Absolute God

For one who is free of the doer ego, his intelligence is untainted. Even though he kills these warriors, he does not kill, and is therefore not bound.

KriyasIt is not desires that are the problem, but rather the attachment to them. What is ‘killed’ as a result of your realization of non-doership is your attachment to desires. 

Your karma is written into the script of your life based on the dictates of your ego. Free of the sense of doership, your script is swept clean and you attain Freedom and unending Happiness.

  • the doer ego (ahamkara) – “I do”; casting oneself in the role of the doer of action 
  • intelligence (buddhi) intellect, understanding, logic, reasoning, discrimination
  • tainted (lipyate) – attached, polluted
  • not bound (nanibadhyate) – free, not enslaved, fettered, tied or restrained

“His intelligence is untainted” Intelligence is buddhi, the faculty of intellect, reason and discrimination. When your intellect is ‘untainted’, you can tell the difference between things and know the truth. But because we have so many desires, buddhi gets tainted by our attachments to them.

Kriyas“For one who is free of the doer ego”
Ego in Sanskrit is ahamkara, which means, “I do”. This should give you some idea of how surrender to God in meditation works to free you from this bondage and bring you to the highest enlightenment.

What you surrender (yourself), and what you surrender it to (Absolute God), are the two keys to this practice in which you are not a doer of action. No matter what you think, experience, see, or understand, all action is the gunas of Nature interacting, and you are not Nature. 

You must take this on faith until you experience it for yourself as fact. Your mind, with its doer-ego at its core, will try to contradict this new realization, but now, through complete surrender to Absolute God, you have the evidence right before your very eyes!

“Now we see through a glass, darkly, but then, face to face; now I know in part, but then shall I know even as also I am known.” — Paul: 1 Corinthians 13:12

“Even though he kills these warriors, he does not kill, and is therefore not bound.” The key is in what your dharma is (this is discussed in more detail later in verses 40-45). You may know intuitively, or you may be self-deluded. It is up to each individual to seek the Truth with pure sincerity and self-honesty, and arrive at the correct answer.

Then, once you have this worked out, if you find that your dharma is to be a warrior for instance, you must understand, even if only intellectually at first, that the Real You does not kill, and take this on faith. Then, and only then, are you in a position to proceed without creating more bondage for yourself. With this enlightened understanding, you will quell the fear of death and be the hero you were meant to be. 

Begin contemplating what the Real You and God/Truth are really like by following the “Ten Keys to Success.” Mastery of these universal principles will insure your success at anything, and deliver special powers.

The Darshan of the Self – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 13, Vs 12

Self & Other Than Self

It is taught that the purpose of Knowledge is Knowledge of Truth. From That, the darshan of the Eternal Self arises. Knowledge contrary to this is ignorance.

  • Knowledge of Truth – True Knowledge, from tattva (Truth is ‘that’, i.e., Otherness).

The purpose of Knowledge of the Absolute is to know the True Self, the Real You. It is from this Knowledge that Self Realization arises as enlightenment, the absence of ignorance.

In other words, Self Realization attained through Knowledge of Truth is enlightenment. Ignorance, which is contrary to this, is the state of not being enlightened. Knowledge of Truth is attained through experience in meditation, not book-learning. However, learning of it from those who have reached it, sets the stage so that this can take place. This is a reference to both guru and scripture as sources of learning.  

Attaining Self Realization is then accomplished through the darshan of the Self — you see your True Self and realize that this ‘Self’ is Other-than-You.

Darshan – ‘To see’: (1) to see something with the eyes, and (2) to see directly, without eyes, thus knowing with certainty that what you are seeing is Real. 

Darshan of the Self – You see your Real Self by means of your inherent power of sight — directly (without eyes). In this way, you obtain knowledge of the Self as Other-than-self, for if you are seeing the Self this begs the question, “Who’s looking?” Obviously, this Self is not the one doing the looking; the looker is You.

Pranam 1

This description of darshan explains why gurus give darshan for students, disciples, and other people who have come to them. The guru knows that he or she is the same as the one who pranams (bows down before them) in ‘what‘ it is that they both really are: Divine Absolute Imperishable Individuals.

Pranam

Thus is pranam a powerful form of surrender, for it is the key to full surrender of oneself to Absolute God in meditation. This surrender is how Self Realization takes place. If you cannot put your ego on the floor and pranam before this Divine Other, you will not surrender sufficiently in your meditation to attain Self Realization. Pranam is the short cut to the Truth of You.

Pranama

A jnani (knowledge oriented person) pranams because he understands it; a bhakti (devotionally oriented) pranams because he is lovingly committed; a yogi (action oriented) pranams out of gratitude for being allowed to do it.

If you are someone who is seeking Self Realization, this message is for you. If you are going about this pursuit by focusing on yourself, you should consider changing your tactics and instead, seek Absolute God as other than you. Then Self Realization will arise of its own accord in your meditation.

Self & OtherAs a human being you can only see yourself as if in a mirror, indirectly, whereas Self Realization is direct. Because you are human and have a mind with an ego at its core, the temptation, encited by the ego, is to think that concentrating on yourself is the way to Self Realization. But this will not work, for as a human being, Absolute Truth/God is obviously other-than-you. 

Tattva – Truth as other-than-you, from tat, ‘that’.

Multi Faces, One Mirror

By trying to reach Self Realization by concentrating on yourself, you are trying to reach Truth via the ego, so all you will get is ego, however exalted your experience may seem. You get what you worship, what you believe, what you surrender to, what you rely on. Hence the need for correct knowledge and understanding of Truth, and the surrender of yourself to That in meditation.

Many people try to reach Self Realization by means of the ego without realizing it. This is self-indulgence, and it is not going to work. It can’t work because Truth in the Absolute sense is other-than-self. Only from a place of Absolute Truth can one truly say, “I am That.”
