The Cosmic Form of Lord Krishna – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 11, Vs 5 – 6

Cosmic Form 14

The Power of God in You

Upon seeing the power of God in everything around you, it is only a short hop to realizing that God is also in you.

Arjuna Sees the Cosmic Form of Lord Krishna

During this dialogue between Lord Krishna and his devotee and childhood friend, Arjuna, Lord Krishna shows him His Cosmic Form.

5
The Blessed Lord spoke:
Arjuna, behold the hundreds and thousands of My divine forms, of various and manifold kinds, and different and various colors.

6
Behold the Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the Ashvins, the Maruts, and innumerable wonders never seen before.

A form suggests the Relative Realm of Creation, not the Absolute and Highest of God from which it comes. What Lord Krishna is showing Arjuna (and us) is Himself in all that exists in the Relative Realm.

These gods suggest some of the characteristics of God within you:

Adityas, unlimited. There is no limit to your potential.

Vasus, dwelling in all beings. You dwell in all beings.

Rudras, fear that drives away evil. The rudimentary fear within your body protects you from harm.

The Ashvin Twins, twin gods who are heavenly physicians. Your body is structured to heal itself.

Maruts, storm gods residing in the North (the head) drive away evil (impurities, misplacements) within the mind and brain. (In meditation the Maruts are seen and experienced as thunder and lightening bolts in the crown of the head.)

The Ashvin Twins
The Ashvin Twins

These ‘gods’, some of whom are regarded as frightening, are aspects of God that dwell within us. We are mostly unaware of them, so their discovery in meditation can be surprising, even scary. But they are our allies, and perform their tasks for our benefit.

You can think of these gods as their functions, or you can think of them as actual entities. As westerners, we are probably more comfortable thinking of them as functions that are inherent within ourselves, but I think it is also important to know that these gods are members of our divine family: They are Divine Individuals who are everywhere (just like You), each acting in the capacity of a specific function within each us. Each of these functions is ruled by one of these gods. I realize that this idea is difficult to comprehend, but it is true none the less.

For a long time now, I have been having very disturbing experiences during my meditation. This began to concern me. After forty-plus years, one expects lovely samadhi experiences, not nightmares. These experiences had me worried and asking God to take these horrors away, but they only increased. While writing this post, I suddenly realized what had been going on, and I now thank God for dismissing my entreaty and upping the ante on this Divine Process.

We are all gods.
We are all everywhere always.
We act in various capacities within all beings.

We are all gods, and each of us rules some function in the Relative Realm of Creation, whether a person, a tree, the wind, an energy, or even such things as darkness and light. Each of us has been named by mystics who have experienced this truth at some time or other, in some place of another.

For this reason alone, it can surely be seen that our lives here are only a side effect of something much Greater, and that this Life we are living is something we are meant to use to know and understand Truth, and bring our human selves into sync with It. This is the purpose and ultimate destiny of all human beings. The more we move forward in this, the better the effects on all others, and hence ourselves as well. To ignore it is to produce the exact opposite effect of helping others.

The Net

Have you ever seen one of those 3D spider webs where hundreds of spiders have built their webs in such a way that all the webs are interconnected? This network of webs looks like one huge, multidimensional web, but there is a center in each individual web that each spider calls home.

When a thread in a single web is plucked, the vibrations are felt throughout the net by the other spiders. Those closest feel it the most. Those farthest away feel it least. In a similar way, the vibrations of what each of us does affects everyone else.

Of course this image is inadequate, but it works this way in nature, and gives us an idea of how each of us affects all other individuals. The only real difference is that there are no connecting lines, because each of us is everywhere always.

Arjuna Asks to See Krishna’s True Form – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 11, Vs 3 – 4

Cosmic Form of Lord Krishna

The Power of God in You

Upon seeing the power of God in everything around you, it is only a short hop to realizing that God is also in you, as You.

Arjuna Asks to See Krishna’s True Form

In this conversation between Lord Krishna and his devotee and childhood friend, Arjuna asks to see His true form.

3

O Supreme Lord, as You have described Your Self thus it is so. Now I wish to see Your original sovereign form.

The First Purusha

This ‘original, sovereign’ individual is puruṣottama, a compound of puruṣa and uttama. Earlier we learned that purusha is the Divine Individual in the state of knowing Other-than-Self (another Divine Individual). This is only one step away from adhyatma as described in verse one, the Self-existent Individual in the Absolute before Creation.

Uttama means first and highest, and puts Krishna (Vishnu) in the position of being the first Divine Individual to know Other-than-Self. This has had the effect of bringing about Creation, and causing us to think of “God” as an individual entity more powerful than ourselves. We are only half wrong about this. In what it is that we really are, we are all exactly the same as Purushottama, and have all the same qualities as That. But we were not the first (uttama).

Even though we are drawn to think of God as a separate individual entity, this First One of us is not more powerful than ourSelves, for all Divine Individuals are the same. But because we do not live in this Reality, we turn to this Purushottama in reaching out to God. Thus does this error in our thinking work to our advantage, for we have forgotten who and what we are, and Purushottama serves the function of Absolute Personal God for us.

Furthermore, because humanity perceives purusha (Self) as male and prakriti (Another) as female, we have gotten ourselves into the habit of thinking of God as male, whereas adhyatma as Purushottama is beyond all such distinctions.

4
O Lord, if you think it possible for me to see, then cause Your Imperishable Self to be seen by me.

Now Arjuna wants to see what Lord Krishna really looks like. He understands that Krishna is what He says He is, but if this is something that can be seen, he wants to see it. Now we must remember that a ‘form’ suggests the Relative Realm of Creation, not the Absolute and Highest of God from which all this comes. Keep this in mind as we go through this chapter; it will answer the inevitable questions that will arise.

This will all become apparent in the next verses as Lord Krishna shows Arjuna His form. It is an experience in two phases: He sees the whole universe in Lord Krishna’s body, and enters into this Cosmic Form and has a hard time tolerating it. Lord Krishna grants Arjuna this privilege in our next issue.

The Eternal Self-Existent Self – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 11, Vs 1

Ascendance

The Power of God in You

Upon seeing the power of God in everything around you, it is only a short hop to realizing that God is also in you.

The Eternal Self-Existent Self

In this conversation between Lord Krishna and his devotee and childhood friend, Arjuna speaks in gratitude to his guru for what he has received and realized.

1
Arjuna spoke:

Out of kindness and for my highest benefit, You have spoken and entrusted me with the mystery of the Self-existent Self, and now this delusion of mine is gone.

Now that Arjuna has understood the great mystery of the true Self and realized it for himself, he is no longer dealing with doubt and confusion. And now he realizes that he is at the beginning of something truly great. He has understood the teachings Lord Krishna has given him, and this has made him firm in his path and full of faith.

Those of us listening in to this conversation may find it remarkable that it has taken Arjuna ten chapters to reach this point. This should tell us something about reaching God, enlightenment, yoga, surrender, union, kundalini, liberation…..

At this point — standing in the middle between the two armies, the two opposing forces in the body — one is in a position to begin Real Yoga and bring them together as Kundalini.

This tells us that some degree of enlightenment has to happen before one reaches this point. We would all like to believe that we are spiritually advanced and highly evolved, but we must pull ourselves together now and take the blow: up until now, we didn’t know zilch. All the things we thought we knew about yoga, meditation, surrender, enlightenment, kundalini, spiritual experiences, etc., was incorrect. But now we are ready and raring to go and take this amazing journey.

The True Self is Eternally Self-Existent

The Sanskrit is Adhyatma, which means ‘one’s own true Self’. The word is defined as ‘own, belonging to self, concerning individual self’.

The real Self is not created, but has always been, is now, and ever shall be. I refer to this Self-existent individual as the Divine Individual, the True Self, the Real You, or Absolute You.

This Self that you really are is eternal, indestructible, all-powerful, all-knowing and all-pervading. Now that sounds a lot like God, doesn’t it?

Also, this Self that you really are is the same as every other Divine Individual. By “same” I do not mean that you are the same one, but that you are the same as all other Divine Individuals—we are all one hundred percent alike. Look again at these words and know them to be your own true nature: eternal, indestructible, all-powerful, all-knowing, all-pervading.

Know this Self that you truly are as the Highest Abode where you can go for relief from the disturbances of life, for peace and rest. To reach this place within yourself, don’t get caught up with ideas like being in the silence, or in the now, or trying to calm your mind, or trying to rid your mind of thoughts or your heart of feelings. All this just keeps the mind active (the mind is activated when you try to make these things happen). Start simply by finding a quiet, non-distracting place that doesn’t stimulate the senses, and sit with this idea.

Don’t get caught up with trying to have an ‘experience’. Just live with this Truth about You for a little while every day. Be like a little child for this short time, and leave behind all your worries, responsibilities and concerns. When you begin to feel your facial muscles relax into a smile, or feel a sweet tear rolling down your cheek, you have reached the doorway to Truth Itself, and Self-realization.

If after days or weeks or months you do not find your True Self, try finding someone who can teach you true and authentic yoga meditation. This will loosen the bonds enveloping this secret place, this Real You.

When you can see this, experience it for yourself, you will know what Arjuna meant when he said that his delusion had gone away.
