When you see that all actions are performed by Nature and that you do nothing, you truly see.

At the point of Self realization, your state will be one in which your reality includes the understanding that all actions occur in Nature, and that what You really are does nothing and never has.

When you see all the different individual living beings situated in the One Absolute from which they are spread out, you enter into Brahman (Absolute God).

  • Enter into Brahman – you attain Godhood

The Imperishable Paramatman being without beginning and without gunas, even though situated in a body, does not act and is therefore untainted by action.

  • Paramatma – Highest Self
  • Gunas – the three active modes of Nature

Where there is no doing, there can be no karma. The word karma means ‘action’ and ‘to do’. Thus, karma is understood as the cause and effect phenomenon that binds us, regardless of whether for good or ill. The only escape is to fully grasp that all action is Nature’s doing, not ours. This is the meaning of ‘enlightenment’.

Just as subtle all-pervading space is not mixed with anything, the True Self is not mixed with the body, even through situated within it.  

  • Mixed – contaminated, corrupted, impure.

Just as the sun alone illumines the whole world, the Lord of the Field illumines the whole Field. 

We each have a tendency to assume identity with the body as ourself. You are the cause of the appearance of your body, but you and your body are not the same. The body appears because of You, but it is not You. You are the Lord of the Field, the Field Knower, who makes the body visible.

When you correctly see through the eye of knowledge, the difference between Nature and Spirit and the means of liberation from Nature, you will go to The Highest. 

Alternate translation:
When through the eye of knowledge, you perceive the difference between the Field (prakriti, Nature, Others) and the Field Knower (purusha, Spirit, Self), as well as the means of liberation of beings from the Field (material nature and the body), you go to The Highest Goal (you get beyond all this).

The means of rising above the influences of the gunas and karma is the realization of non-doership — all action occurs in Nature and You are not Nature.

God’s Messages to You

Before you came into embodiment, you had no sense of your own existence. Then there came a time when you became aware of your existence. This precipitated an interest in the possibility of there being others like you. Upon discovering that indeed there were, the first Individual known to you was a different one than you, but nevertheless the same as you. Your acceptance of this Other, who had also accepted You as the same as Itself, was a marriage made in heaven, and the beginning of a journey you would take together through many lifetimes.

This event unwittingly created a longing for a soul mate in the present state of being human. But the reality is that you need not long for this anymore. Your soul mate is already with you as Ishvara, the Divine Other within who carries the template of your perfect form, the vehicle for your journey. 

On your journey, and rounding the bend to find this Song of God (Bhagavad Gita), you will be attempting to place yourself on the map. Where are you now? How far have you come? How close to Home are you? What will be next? 

These questions are being answered in this Song, a song written in such a way that it applies to you and your travels, and can be heard by you to ease your journey. It sings its words in layers of meaning within each cluster of verses, and even each individual verse, so that you can listen to God’s messages to you, and be guided. What a wonderful gift is this Song of God!

Ascension to Godhood

Embraced by God

Entering into God, being embraced by the divine surrounder, suggests that God is other than you. This is important. It does not mean that the your Real Self is not God, but that you will find the joy you have always wished for, the fulfillment and happiness that you so desperately seek, by entering into God. In these verses, Lord Krishna tells you how to do this:

Stop thinking about “self” and devote yourself solely to God as other than you. Do this as your meditation for a period of time, preferably on a day-to-day basis, or do it every day, all day long. All the practices mentioned below have merit, but this shortcut is a gift to you from God.

52 – 53
Krishna spoke:
This form of Mine that you have seen is difficult to behold, even for the gods, who are constantly wishing to see it. Not through the study of scriptures, austerities (tapas), gifts, or making sacrificial offerings to gods and ancestors, can I be seen as you have seen Me.

54 – 55
But by devotion not directed elsewhere, I can be known, truly seen and entered into. One who does My highest action with devotion to Me, with all attachments abandoned and free of enmity toward any being, comes to Me, Son of Pandu.

Seeing, knowing and entering into God, is to be embraced by the Divine Surrounder. This is made possible through sole devotion, trust, faith and love of God in the performance of the Highest Action (God-practice) with non-attachment and non-enmity toward all beings. 

These prerequisites for Godhood are specifically mentioned for a reason. This ‘highest action’ taught by Lord Krishna has been misused for various purposes, such as seeking power or fame, and Lord Krishna wants us to know that, even if such a goal were to succeed, it will not last, and it will not lead us to Him — to seeing, knowing and entering into His state of Godhood.

Son of Pandu

Arjuna is the son of Pandu, which means ‘pale, white’. He is fair-skined, and of the race of the Sun, whereas Krishna, which means ‘dark blue-black’ is of the race of the Moon. These two together, along with their position in the middle between two armies, suggest that the Bhagavad Gita is an exposition on Hatha Yoga.

Hatha Yoga is the union of Sun (prana) and Moon (apana). This union takes place in the middle, between the these two opposing forces in the body. This union is the awakening of the evolutionary force: kundalini.

Taking a Chance on God

Taking into account the gambling that got the Pandus into their present situation (a war), we also think of the Pandus as risk-takers. This suggests that Hatha Yoga is advanced by our being willing to take a chance.

Risk suggests that we are not in control. This lands us in the world of surrender, and taking a chance on God. But we are not going to just surrender, we are going to take Lord Krishna’s teachings seriously and surrender only to Absolute God as the ultimate form of Devotion. And now ‘risk’ is turned into faith, trust, love, and surrender to God as the most expedient means of attaining union with That.

You get what you surrender to.

There are conditions to this Highest Action: (1) devotion to Absolute God, (2) all attachments abandoned, and (3) freedom from enmity toward any being.

We might say that this Highest Action is one’s determination to surrender to Absolute God, and this works, for once having done so, that Highest Action will begin to materialize in meditation in the form of kriyas (spontaneous purifying actions). At first these kriyas are mostly mental, but they soon begin to include the physical, and one experiences spontaneous movements of the body.

The spontaneous movements of the mind are no surprise to anyone, but when movements of the body begin, the practitioner begins to doubt his or her surrender: “I had the thought in my mind of the body moving before it actually moved, so was my mind making it happen?” By continuing the practice, these kinds of doubts will all be washed away.

Absolute Devotion to Absolute God

Here I would remind those of you who are engaged in surrender sadhana, of the importance of differentiating between surrendering to Relative God (God in general, including the Cosmic Form) and Absolute God, God’s “highest nature.” You must resort to, surrender to, only the Absolute, whether Personal or Impersonal.

Godhood“Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and the sense of self as the doer of action (ego), are the eight parts of my relative nature—such is My inferior nature. But know this as different from My highest absolute existence by which this world is sustained.” — Bhagavad Gita, Ch 7, vs 4 – 5

If you feel you don’t know God well enough to know what you are surrendering to, contemplate the word “absolute”. Look it up in a dictionary. All you need is an idea of God as Absolute for surrender to work for you. Lord Krishna has given us tons of defining characteristics of both Relative and Absolute God in this chapter alone, and there are more in other chapters.

With All Attachments Abandoned

Most of you will be flinching at this. You are attached to people and things you have desired and acquired, and the idea of not being attached to them in order to keep them is understandably uncomfortable to contemplate.  Let me reassure you that you can easily “abandon all attachments” once you realize that no one wants to take anything away from you, and that this non-attachment is only for the duration of your meditation. If you stay with this meditation, non-attachment will begin to spill over into your life over time, to the degree that you let it.

Freedom!

Ultimately, you will discover that being attached to something is a form of bondage, no matter how sweet it is, and you will come to like the idea of letting attachments go. You will also discover that this doesn’t mean that the person or thing you are attached to must go away. It is your attachment to that person or thing that goes away.

  • When you can enjoy something without being attached to it, you will enjoy it more.
  • When you can love someone without being attached to them, you will be giving them the gift of freedom, and your love will grow deeper.

An attachment is wanting to keep something you already have. A desire is the want of something you don’t have. It is worthy of note that abandonment of desire is not mentioned as requisite for entering into God.

I am that desire in man that is not contrary to Truth” — Lord Krishna

Free of Enmity Toward Any Being

Tapas - sweet and kindThis is the first step of the first step of Yoga. You may know it as ahimsa, non-injury, non-killing, non-violence. This includes bearing malice (mental), hurtful speech (emotional), and physical or material harm. This applies to all beings, including yourself. The minute you violate ahimsa, you instantly move yourself further away from God/Truth, and Self-realization becomes even more illusive.

Embraced by God

So keep these things in mind when you walk into your meditation room: “I am completely harmless. I am lovingly devoted to Absolute God. I am not attached to anything.” Then surrender to Absolute God with singular devotion. Trust God and don’t worry. God is now in charge of everything, and preparing you to enter into, and become embraced, by God.

When your alarm sounds, give yourself some down-time before returning to other activities. Your sadhana can continue at other times by practicing non-attachment and non-injury in daily life.

Lord Krishna Returns to His Gentle Human Form – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 11, Vs 47 – 51

This post addresses the Lord’s affection for Arjuna, spiritual practices that will not produce the vision of His Cosmic Form, the impact of tapas, and Krishna’s return to his gentle human form to pacify Arjuna.

In the story of the Mahabharata war, this Bhagavad Gita is a conversation between Lord Krishna and his devotee and childhood friend, Arjuna. Listening in, we receive the teachings of Lord Krishna as he relates them to Arjuna.

The Blessed Lord spoke:

Because I am pleased with you (Arjuna), by means of my Yoga Power I have shown you this glorious and infinite Cosmic Form of Mine, which has never been seen before by anyone but you.

Anyone other than Arjuna? Remember that Arjuna represents You.

Not by the knowledge-sacrifice or recitation, not by giving, not even by fearless kriyas or formidable tapas can I be seen in this form in the world of men by anyone other than you, O Hero of the Kurus.

What Krishna is saying is that the vision of the Cosmic Form will not happen as a result of these many well-known practices. These practices are not being faulted, but noted as ineffectual for the purpose of gaining the vision of the Cosmic Form, which, by now, you may be thinking to be a gift you do not especially wish for. However, if you do, the next few posts will be helpful.

Knowledge Sacrifice – the study and teaching of scriptures

Oral recitation – recitation of the scriptures

Giving – charity, imparting, teaching

Kriyas – spontaneous purifying actions occurring in meditation, ‘ritual’

Tapas – the heat that melts away impurities

Knowledge Sacrifice. We have learned that sacrifice is synonymous with surrender as it applies to Yoga, but here it is attached to a word that means ‘true and sacred knowledge’ (veda). These written teachings are scriptures; the ‘sacrifice’ is the study of these texts — one surrenders to Truth as found in these writings, and they in turn present their meanings.

Oral RecitationLong ago, it was customary to memorize scriptures for the purpose of their preservation, learning and teaching, and for contemplation with regard to one’s sadhana (practices) and daily living. The oral recitation of these texts was a common practice.

Giving is a spiritual practice for gaining merit through seva (selfless service) and dana (gifts, donations, charity). With it one acquires positive karma that can be used for improving one’s life and for doing yoga sadhana, and increasing one’s chance of attaining heaven or liberation.

Kriya is often translated as ‘ritual’. Rituals are practiced in temples, in the home, and in meditation, or as meditation.

In surrender yoga, kriya (‘performed action’) refers to actions that arise spontaneously in Natural Surrender Meditation. These actions occur for the purpose of purification, and are performed not by the meditator, but by Shakti Herself: Divine Energy.

This meditation is so profound because it is based entirely on Sanatana Dharma (Eternal Truth, the way things really are): “Even though acting one does nothing.”

In the beginning, the meditator is confused about who or what is performing these actions, but with sufficient practice and the surfacing of amazing new experiences, the meditator gradually comes to understand the source of these actions, these ‘rituals’.

Tapas. As a result of one’s surrender and the occurrence of kriyas, tapas begins automatically. The body leaves behind the coldness that prompted a dozen blankets, and one begins to feel very hot. This is the advent of tapas: ‘to heat, burn or melt’. Now impurities are beginning to get transformed or burned away within the body rather than just getting removed. Over time, the heat is turned up and one’s tapas becomes formidable, heralding the arrival of Kundalini at Her new home at the 6th chakra.

In more recent times, some yogis have taken up tapas as a practice of a most unusual and extreme nature:

We in the West may see these people as indulging in mortification of the flesh and look down on them and their practices. But we must remember the earlier teachings about thinking only of God/Truth at all times. These men and women have taken this teaching seriously and given up everything for God. They wear no clothes, accept what comes for their sustenance, and maintain tapasya at all times. By living their tapas they live in constant awareness of God. I have the deepest respect for them. Because of our all-inclusive presence within each other as beings, their tapasya is helping to keep this world in tact and your life better than it might otherwise be.  औं नम: शिवाय (Om namah Shivaya).

Speaking in this way to Arjuna, the Son of Vasudeva (Krishna) revealed again his gentle two-armed form. The Great Souled One, resuming his previous form of beautiful appearance, pacified the fearful Arjuna.

Seeing this, Your gentle two-armed human form once again, O Agitator of Men, my thoughts are composed and I am restored to my normal consciousness.
