The Power of God & You

The manifestations of God in the world, in you, and in the entire universe.

The eighteen chapters of the Bhagavad Gita is a conversation between Arjuna and his childhood friend and Guru, Lord Krishna. Arjuna has asked Him to explain how He, as Absolute God, exists within Creation. Lord Krishna began answering this question in verses 19-20, “God In You”, and continues:

Of the Adityas, I am Vishnu. Of heavenly luminaries, I am the radiant sun. Of the Maruts, I am Marici. Of heavenly bodies, I am the moon.

Alternate translation:
I am Unlimited (Aditya) and pervade all that is (Vishnu). Of light appearing in the three worlds (of the body), I am the Sun (Prana, the Life Energy). Of the Storm Gods (Maruts) I am lightening (Marici). Of heavenly bodies, I am the Moon (soma):

Expansion:
As the Unlimited (Absolute), I pervade everything. Of heavenly luminaries I am the Sun, the Life Energy in the three worlds of the body. Of the Storm and Wind Gods (Maruts) I am the lightening (Marici) striking in the heaven of bodies (the head), where I am also the ‘moon of mystery’.

Aditya means ‘coming from Aditi’. Aditi is one of the most ancient Indian of Goddesses. She represents the Eternal and Infinite. The word aditi means ‘boundless, inexhaustible, abundance, unimpaired, and perfect’.

God Everywhere

Lord Krishna is an avatara of Vishnu embodied in the relative realm of this world. All His vibhutis (powers, manifestations) are evidence of Him as Absolute God pervading everything…this material world, as well as the personal world of your body. Absolute Unlimited God is everywhere in everything, microcosmically and macrocosmically. The Relative could not exist without the Absolute.

Everything is Absolutely Relative

Absolute God is not being anything because It is already everything, and so are You (think about that for a minute).

The light “appearing in the three worlds” is jyoti. This light, or fire (energy), is in the ‘kind and gracious’ central channel (sushumna) of the body through which Goddess Kundalini travels upward. The Absolute exists in this relative world as this evolutionary force. She is not evolution itself, but the force, the power, of itThings change because of Her, but Kundalini Herself never changes. 

Earth, Sky and Heaven

The world of Earth is up to the diaphragm. The Sky, or Atmosphere, is from the diaphragm up to and including the fifth chakra. Heaven is above.

The ascent of the Life Energy with Kundalni through the central channel of the body is brought on by the Storm God, Marici, ‘lightening’, which can be seen in meditation. This visual experience indicates the production of soma by the pineal gland. Soma is amrita, the nectar of immortality, before it is pure. The purpose of amrita is the attainment of your natural state as a Divine, Indestructible, Absolute Individual.

Marici (lightening) is also the name of the first of the Seven Rishis of the first Manvantara  (306,720,000 of our years) whose Manu (ruling force) was Svayambhu. Svayambhu means ‘self-existent’, which describes Absolute God, and You as a Divine Absolute Individual.

WHO you are is the individual. WHAT you are is Absolute. Now that you know this, it is time to move on and put yourself and your life in sync with this Truth.

Coming Together in Devotion – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 10, Vs 8-11

I am the origin of all that exists. Everything is set into motion from Me. Thus do the wise with the ability to meditate, worship Me. Their consciousness fixed on Me, their Life Energy flows to Me. Sharing their experiences of Me, they enlighten each other and are fulfilled and delighted.

“To those who are always thus devoted and worshipping with kindness and affection, I bestow this knowledge and understanding of Yoga by which they come to Me. For them, out of sympathy for their goal, I, dwelling within their own beings, cause the darkness produced by ignorance to be destroyed with the illuminating light of this knowledge.”

Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 10, Verses 8-11

Here we find the first obvious message stressing the importance of individuals coming together in order to reach God. This is critical for enriching the devotional side of YogaWithout it, it can be harsh and filled with difficulties. This can be mitigated by community and gatherings “accompanied by kindness and affection.” What a wonderful way to live! (See SKY Haven)

Alternate translation:
I am all that is, for all that is comes forth from Me. With this understanding, one can meditate correctly. Thus does one truly worship Me.

If we understand what we have been taught, we have the ability to meditate. Correctly practiced, meditation is worship of God. To meditate correctly one needs the knowledge and understanding by which one’s meditation is “yoga practiced without alteration of the rule and observed before any other rule as one’s first duty,” as mentioned in verse seven.

“Their consciousness fixed on Me”
The Sanskrit for attention is chitta. Chitta is consciousness—not consciousness of something, but pure consciousness itself, the subtlest form of divine energy.

“Their Life Energy flowing to Me”
When chitta flows to something, someone or some place, it is called attention, and where the attention goes, the Life Energy in the body, called prana, also goes.

The stuff of which the mind is made, is chitta, consciousness. 
Attention is a flow of consciousness from the mind to anything that is other than self.

Mind > AttentionWhere the attention goes, the energy flows.

With the attention going to Lord Krishna, one’s Life Energy goes to, and can unite with, Lord Krishna, Highest and First Purusha, Personal God. 

In “Finding the Magician Within” we were alerted to the extreme importance of Attention as being the key to achieving just about anything. This was presented in the context of reaching God/Truth, but it applies to anything. We even brought up Life Mastery in that article, and the necessity of constant Attention on the goal in order to attain it. Lord Krishna is bringing us back to this in this verse when He says that with consciousness (attention) fixed on Him, our Life Energy also flows to Him. This was earlier referred to as ‘worship’, or ‘meditation’, as the means of attaining union (yoga) with God.

You get what you worship

Dance and ChantThe next piece of the verse suggests that the most satisfying and pleasant way for accomplishing this is to be together with others with whom you can share Truth. This is called satsanga (‘Truth-sharing’).
Satsanga - ChantingSatsanga often includes any or all of the following: darshan (meeting the guru), kritana (music, dancing and singing to and about God/Truth), sharing experiences, and receiving teachings. In this way we “enlighten each other.” We awaken each other to God/Truth, and our attachments to previously limited expectations and ideas are forgotten. Enjoying this process, we find that our attention effortlessly remains on God/Truth throughout.

To these worshippers, who are always thus devoted and worshipping with kindness and affection, I bestow this knowledge and understanding of Yoga by which they come to Me.
For them, out of sympathy for their goal, I, dwelling within their own beings, cause the darkness produced by ignorance to be destroyed, with the shining lamp of this knowledge.

Always means always. Continuously coming together according to the previous verse. If we understand the universality of God’s presence within everyone and everything, we will naturally be kind and treat each other with affection. This being the case, one is enlightened as to the Truth of Yoga as the means of union with God/Truth. This union destroys the darkness of ignorance, and proves the Yoga we have been taught.

This enlightenment is possible because of God’s already existent presence within all of us. God is saying that, because we understand this, practice Yoga and treat each other well, we need make no further effort, for God will turn the lights on for us.

Origin and Transformation – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 9, Vs 17

“Of all Life I am the origin, the father, the mother and the ancestors. I am the means of purification, sacred knowledge, the sacred syllable OM, mantras, songs and rituals.” — Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 9, Verse 17 

Stop and think about what in all life is the father and mother, the cause of life, and the ancestors. Then think about how this relates to a means of purification, sacred knowledge, the sound of Om, mantras, songs and rituals. 

Thought it over? Now read this version of the same verse, also from the Sanskrit:

Alternate translation:
I am the bestower of life, the mother, the father and those who came before them, the ancestors. I am the means of purification in sacred knowledge and the sacred sound of creation, OM, in mantras, hymns and sacred practices.

Self and other-than self bestows life, yours and the lives of the ancestors who came before you, and live in you as genetic information (DNA). Connected with this is purification, the reordering of this information to get things where they belong or destroy them. This process is instigated and carried out by the Divine Goddess, Kundalini-Shakti and Prana acting as one. 

Origin

The vibrations of the sound of OM form the mantras (repetitive sounds), hymns (tone and rhythm) in rituals (practices) that effect this purification. This is known in sacred wisdom passed down through lineages of teachers.OMkara, the sounding of OM

  • OM (omkara, OM-doing) – the origin of creation, the sounding of OM.

Sound is the effect of vibration, so you could say that to hear the sound of OM would be to hear the vibrations of Creation. We don’t hear this sound with our ears because these sound-vibrations are too subtle. Or to put it another way, we do hear it—we hear it all the time, but we can’t separate it from all the other sounds in our world, including our own electrical substations in the brain. However, it can be heard clearly and distinctly in meditation because, in that state, one is not dependent on the ears to hear.

OMkara is the sounding of OM, the power of hearing and the ability to speak.

Anything perceptible as sound is so because of OMkara, the sound of OM. All sounds have their source in OMkara as variations (tones) or mutations (noise).

You and Other-than-You
(Purusha and Prakriti)

Akasha (ether > perception by hearing) initiates air (atmosphere > perception by sight), which initiates fire (energy > perception by touch), which initiates water (fluid substance > perception by taste), which initiates earth (material substance > perception by smell).

Transformation

Hearing, seeing, and feeling the blissful sound of OM in meditation marks the beginning of transformation. This process is slowed down by three things:

Attachments to the things of this world, to your own body or anything about it, to people, to being liked, to getting or holding on to things, to responsibilities, to  trying to do the right thing, to chasing desires, etc.

Resistance to change (even unknowingly), self-doubt, non-conducive conditions, the lack of privacy and peace, and other limiting situations in life that cause one to resist, doubt and misunderstand what is really going on.

Misunderstanding what is happening. If one gets to this point, another stage will begin in which changes are being made at a deeper level, in the DNA. During this time, some, but not all, glitches will surface as they are being worked out. Misinterpreting these events can cause self-doubt—Gee, what’s wrong with me!? I must not be fit for Yoga. I should probably quit. But this is not a good place to try to get off the bus. If you do, you may get stuck with glitches that were in the midst of being corrected!     

It is because of these obstacles that earlier chapters had much to say about ‘faith’. Faith is especially needed during these phases. Even if faith is only pretended (one must do what one must). The use of pretending to yourself to have faith (consciously, of course) is amazingly effective. I speak from experience.

Because of so much emphasis on Truth, and speaking only the truth, we sometimes get so serious that we forget the magic of childhood when pretend was not telling a lie, but was a form of play. Some say that the task of childhood is survival, but I disagree. I believe that the only task that should be expected of a child is play. Children are closer to our natural state of happiness than we are, and they engage in pretending all the time. We should all take a lesson from them. Imagination will keep the mind flexible. A mind that is not flexible is neither strong nor bright.

One must be like a little child to enter the kingdom of heaven.
