To Hell in a Hand Basket, Bhagavad Gita, Ch 16, Vs 12 – 19

Hell in a Handbasket

12
Bound by hundreds of desires driven by lust and anger, the Demonic strive to accumulate hoards of wealth by any means, all for the gratification of their own desires.

“By any means” also means, “by unjust means.”

12 – 15
“I have acquired so much wealth today so I will now fulfill these desires of mine. All this is mine, and tomorrow I shall have more. I have slain that enemy and I shall slay others, also. I am God. I am the Enjoyer. I am Powerful. I am Happy. I am rich and highborn. Who is equal to me? I will perform sacrifice, give alms, and rejoice!” So say those deluded by ignorance.

This is a look into the minds and self-talk of the ‘demonic’.

16 – 17
Beset by this net of illusions and many confused imaginings, and addicted to sensual pleasures, they descend to a foul hell of torment. Self-conceited and obstinate, full of pride and arrogance for all their wealth, they perform ostentatious sacrifices in name only, with no regard for scriptural injunctions.

“A foul hell of torment” refers to the end result. It also means, ‘inferior states of existence’, which is where this kind of person finds himself here in this life, or in the next.

18 – 19
Blinded by egoism, power, arrogance, desire and anger, the demonic hate Me in their own bodies and in the bodies of others. These hateful, cruel and vile men, I hurl again and again into the cycles of rebirth and demonic forms of existences secured at birth.

“The demonic hate Me” also means “the demonic abuse Me.”

ArrivalBecause of their demonic natures, their lives and deaths are inauspicious. Returning after death, this brings them into situations with unfortunate families of evil people, where they will reap what they have sown.

Some of demonic natures who are not overtly hateful, cruel and vile, take the form of a kind of shallow apathy. They have no real interest in others, the planet, the lives of people or innocent creatures. They say, “There’s nothing we can do about it. We just have to accept these things.” Instead, they indulge in a morass of “many confused imaginings.” Looking for something to do, and trying to make themselves feel something, they seek experiences provided by other people, or they become addicted to sensual pleasures. They are dead inside. Their idea of “deep” is completely superficial and produces nothing of value or merit.

The Way of the World in the Kali Yuga

Kali Yuga – the darkest of the four ages

This is the way of our world today. With all the positive things our technology has brought us, it has come at a huge price — an overall disinterest in anything other than self. I have noticed this even with my posts. When a title has the word “self” in it, there are more viewers. When a title has the word “God” in it, there are few.

People seem to be enamored with themselves. We are supposedly adults, but we are really only two years old — with two year old emotions and behaviors (i.e., all or nothing, black or white, etc.). We bonk the other kid over the head who tries to play in our sandbox, and we think we’re hot stuff. We are small children in big bodies. We must grow up. We must grow into our adult bodies and become the mature adults we were meant to be.

If you think I am just being some kind of religious zealot, think again. I challenge you to look at what is going on around you, and in the world, with an objective eye. Just watch, notice, pay attention, and you will see it, too. And once you have seen it, you will be shocked to the core, and motivated to grow more — for your own sake, and for the sake of everyone else — and be welcomed into the fellowship of those who have seen what you have seen.

This observation should not be taken up with judgement, or with efforts to change other people. Your own forward growth and enlightenment will take care of them. Free and conscious choice is a power that exists within each person, and should never be violated. To violate this, even with good intentions, can only send us backward.

There is only one thing you can do to help: Upgrade your present commitment to improve your life (no matter how great it is now), increase your spiritual knowledge and practice and advance yourself.

Everything you do affects everyone else.

The Self is the Same in All Beings – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 13, Vs 27-31

Spontaneous Creation - Shakti

The Self is the Same In All Beings

27
Know that anything that comes into being, whether standing still or moving, exists due to the union of the Field and the Field Knower.

“The union of the Field and the Field Knower” is a reference to a previous verse in which the Field Knower is said to be the Real You (a Divine Individual, purusha), and the Field is said to be the body (Nature, prakriti).

It is fair to say that both Prakriti and Purusha are God. All Divine Individuals are God. All of Us are God as both Purusha and Prakriti, the Seer and the Seen. We are each who we are as Individuals who can know, or see, Others like ourSelves. And we are each Individuals who can be known, or seen, by Others like ourSelves. All that truly exists is Us — All Is God.

To understand this, you must consider it in the context of The Absolute, that Reality in which there are no mirages, no things, and nothing going on but eternal bliss — imperishable Us in our natural state of divinity, eternal happiness and joy. From this Absolute God came spontaneous Creation. And so it is said, “All Is God.”

In the Absolute before Creation, once we each became aware of our existence, it was inevitable that we consider the possibility that we were not the only ones in existence. The process of making this discovery is the first cause of Creation, and is the first cause of our Liberation now. Now we must follow the string we unrolled behind us, back the way we came. When we finally get Home, one thing will be different: we will be conscious of it all. We will be conscious of our True Selves, and our relationship with eachOther, existing in mutual Eternal Love and Happiness. Because this is our Natural State.

Spontaneous Creation 1When in The Absolute (before Creation) you perceived Another, you might either have accepted this Other or not.

Your first acceptance of Another Individual who also accepted You, united You with that Other. This first Other that you accepted is called IshvaraThis union brought about your coming into Being. There is no identifiable difference between you and Ishvara, and yet your sense-of-self is singular (asmita, ‘I am’).

The subtle, intuitive sense of this truth is what is behind your pursuit of a loving relationship in your life, a soul-mate if you will. One expects to find that divine one here on Earth, but it is already found. This divine one is within you as the witness experiencing everything, when all the while you have believed this to be you.

I am That I am

28
One who sees that Great Ishvara as the same in all beings, imperishable among the perishable, truly sees.

The Field & the Field Knower - The Embodied One & the Being“One who sees that Great Ishvara as the same in all beings”
You see that everyone in a body is in the same situation as you: This Great Ishvara is the first Divine Individual in the Absolute that you accepted as the same as you, and who has also accepted you. Both are equally unlimited in their presence. This situation is the same for all embodied beings.

“Imperishable among the perishable” refers to You and your Ishvara as you really are: Divine Individuals that are imperishable, living as One Being that is perishable.

When you see that WHAT you really are is a Divine Imperishable Individual residing in a body, and that this situation with Ishvara is the same for all of us, you see Truly.

Every Divine Individual is an individual just like You.

29
Seeing this Great Ishvara as the same in everyone, one does not degrade himself and reaches the Highest State.

When you harm or degrade yourself, hurt or put yourself down, you do the same to Ishvara. Now remember who this is, and you will see how important it is that you become enlightened about this situation, so that you never harm or degrade yourself in any way. Ishvara, whom you love, is your ‘witness within’ who experiences everything you experience, and will also experience any harm you do to yourself or others.

Our attention is being called to how degrading or harming ouselves affects everyone else. Both you and Ishvara are also present in everyone else, so what you do affects not only Ishvara, but everyone else as well. By knowing and understanding this, you can reach the Highest State, the basis of which is the first Universal Spiritual Principle (the first yama), ahimsa — harmlessness toward all beings, including yourself, physically, mentally (not bearing malice) and emotionally (through speech). In this Highest State, one knows the Self to be the same in all Beings.

Creation, Destruction, Rebirth & The Self – Bhagavad Gita, Ch 10, Vs 32-35

Vishnu Creation

The Power of God & You

The manifestations of God in the world, in you, and in the entire universe.

The eighteen chapters of the Bhagavad Gita is a conversation between Arjuna and his childhood friend and Guru, Lord Krishna. Arjuna has asked Him to explain how He, as Absolute God, exists within Creation (beginning with verses 19-20, “God in You”):

Creation, Destruction, Rebirth & The Self

32
Of creations, I am the beginning, the middle and the end, and of knowables I am the knower of Adhyatma, the true Self. Of discussions I am the telling.

Alternate translation:
I am the beginning of the rushing forth of creation, as well as its destruction, Arjuna, and I am what lies between. Of knowables, I am the knower of the Supreme Self, and of conversations, I am the conveying of communications.

First He says that He is the beginning, middle and end of all things created, and then He follows with ‘knowables’ — things that can be known — and specifically, that He is the knower of the Supreme Self. By this we understand that the True Self can be known, and that He knows You as You really are. He is also saying that it is He who speaks when information, such as oral teachings, are being conveyed.

Creation, with its beginning, middle and end, is Relative, but the True Self is Absolute. Knowing is relative, but the Truth spoken in oral teachings is the Absolute Truth.

Self-referencing Experiment:
The connection of one individual with another is God. The next time you speak to someone, remember this and allow your attention to take in the Divine presence in your communion or communication with that person, whether you like this person or what is being spoken, or not. Check your own communications against the Yamas so that you are conveying the Divine when you speak. Remember that Absolute God is in you, as You.

33
Of letters I am the letter A, and of compound words, I am the union of syllables. And I alone am infinite Time, facing in all directions.

The letter “A”. Of the sound of letters (syllables in Sanskrit) of the alphabet, I am the imperishable vowel “A” (akṣara, meaning imperishable, unalterable, absolute). The letter A is the initiation (shakti) of all human speech, and the basis of the sounds of primary vowels (f), without which no consonant (m) can manifest.

Compound words. Of compound words, I am the union of their parts, and their wholeness as a single word.

Time, facing in all directions. Of Time, I am its endlessness. Undecaying time goes out, ‘faces’, or exists, in all directions everywhere always. There is in Reality, no end to it. It cannot end because, for the Absolute, there is no end. All time is present all the time. We experience it as linear because, as human beings, we have a point of view.

To expand your point of view, begin by taking different points of view about everything.

I have been heard to say that, in the Absolute, there is no time. This might be better expressed by saying that, in the Absolute there is no time going on. Time is not motion. Time presents changes in Creation that make it appear to be moving, the same way that you feel like you are moving in a stationary car-wash as the equipment cleans your car, or standing on a train platform as a train goes by. It is the train that is moving, not you. It is the car wash that is moving, not your car.

The basis of Time is pure consciousness which is everywhere in all directions. So Time exists in all directions everywhere, and like consciousness, is also infinite. This teaching is symbolized in murits (material forms) expressing omniscience:

34-35
I am death and the source of all things to come. Of the feminine, I am beauty, speech, remembered teachings, and also surrender, satisfaction and fortitude. Of the Sama Veda, I am the Brihatsamana and Gayatri meters. Of months, I am the month of harvest, and of seasons, the Spring.

Alternate translation:
I am all-destroying death and the origin of future existences. Of the feminine, I am glory, communication and oral teachings, and also patience, renunciation and fulfillment.
Of knowledges that can be sung, I am the masculine and rhythmic duple meter (two beats), and the feminine and beguiling triple meter (three beats). Of months I am the harvest month in the Fall, and of the seasons I am the ‘abounding with flowers’, the Springtime.
