The eighteen chapters of the Bhagavad Gita is a conversation between Arjuna and his childhood friend and Guru, Lord Krishna. Arjuna has asked Him to explain how He, as Absolute God, exists within Creation (beginning with verses 19-20, “God in You”):

Of sovereign rulers, I am the scepter of power, and of those desirous of victory, I am prudence. And I am the silence of secrets and the wisdom of the wise.

The word sovereign is significant. It refers to independence, the ability to rule ourselves and our lives without having to resort to something outside ourselves. You may remember earlier (ch 3, vs 17, “Heaven Within”) we learned that “one whose delight, satisfaction and contentment is in the self alone,” is not compelled to act. The key word here is “compelled”. This is a place of power, and places victory within reach. We have but to be prudent in how we proceed.

Independence may seem inconsistent with the idea of resorting to God and Guru. But resorting to God or Guru is an act of independence because we act from our inherent power of choice to do so. All good rulers have ministers who guide them, but in the end, it is the ruler who decides the course of action. When one is a master, one is not subject to being mastered, controlled. This is a form of liberation.

Alternate translation:
Of masters, I am their staff of power, and of those who desire victory, I am the proper action. I am the secrets of the mysteries and the wisdom of those who comprehend them.

True independence is the key to mastery. The signpost of genuine independence is that when you are truly independent you will have no compelling desires or attachments. There may be things you would like to have or to keep, but they will not rule you, or commandeer your power of choice.  

The scepter, or staff, is not just a symbol of power, it evidence of it. The Sanskrit also means banner. The banner atop the staff of a warrior depicts the standard of its owner. Arjuna’s staff flew a banner, or standard, with an image of Hanuman, the monkey god.

Hanuman is the famous monkey who, due to his undying devotion, became vested with the eight superhuman powers and immortality. The image of Hanuman on Arjuna’s banner signals him as Arjuna’s standard, his determined level of attainment. So he is not someone to mess with. He means business.

Krishna, the Silence of Secrests

“I am the silence of secrets and the wisdom of the wise—the secrets of the mysteries and the knowledge of those who comprehend them.”

On the heels of the last verse, we are again reminded of our power and that we want victory, so Lord Krishna is telling us how to get it: with devotion, carefulness, wisdom and silence.

There are teachings that we will not read in books or blogs, but which are carried through lineages of teachers and imparted directly to disciples according to their needs. In this way, these teachings, and the uninitiated, are protected.

That there are secrets in Yoga is well known. That some people take exception to this, is also well known. The Bhagavad Gita is full of them, and so is the Bible or any other true scripture. Lord Krishna is saying that the restraint of not exposing these ‘secrets’ inappropriately is Him, and that this is in itself, a power. The assuming of power through secrecy is behind the many secret societies that exist into the present day. 

Of those who have been initiated into these teachings because they have reached a point at which they pertain to their sadhana (practice), Lord Krishna is their newfound wisdom. Those who know and comprehend these teachings and carry them in silence within themselves, are carrying God/Truth.

And also, all that has already come into being, whether moving or non-moving, I am the source of that. Nothing can exist without Me.

The word for ‘source’ in Sanskrit is bīja. This is almost always translated as ‘seed’ in Yoga texts, making the creative essence of all beings male. But bīja not only means ‘seed’ but ‘germ’, which is more rudimentary than ‘seed’ and makes more sense. In human reproduction, the ‘germ’ is the embryo, and even more fundamentally, the zygote.

A zygote is a fertilized ovum (egg). In humans, this ‘source’ that is Lord Krishna, can only be this egg. Remember Haranyagarbha? This is an egg, not a seed. This came up earlier in chapter three (The Golden Womb and The Ancient Imperishable Teachings of Yoga). 

The fertilized ovum (zygote) then, is the Ardhanaranarishvara (half-male-half-female-god) form of Lord Shiva, which gives rises to an embryo and develops into another human beingThe ancient sages knew that everyone starts life as female.

Of gamblers I am the risk, and of the noble I am their efficacy. I am the victory of the determined, and the purity and goodness of the resolute.

There are several ways to translate this verse. To keep it down to one, I am using what is most applicable to my own sadhana.

Of gamblers I am the risk. This works for me because I understand from the Mahabharata that the good guys, the Pandavas, were involved in gambling. This kind of behavior is usually looked down on by the religious, but there is a special meaning here:

The Pandavas, Arjuna’s people, were urged over and over again by Lord Krishna Himself, to take up this ‘battle’. He advised this for the purpose of regaining their throne, their inheritance, so they finally acquiesced and surrendered to Lord Krishna and accepted his guidance.

This also applies to us. We have lost our throne, our authority over our own selves and our own lives. Taking a chance and surrendering to Absolute God/Truth will reverse this situation and bring you into your inheritance. Surrender to a God you don’t know yet may seem like a risk, but one takes this risk on faith in order to achieve victory. The end result is union (yoga) with That.

Of the noble, I am their efficacy. Making the choice to engage in this battle and put God in the driver’s seat as Arjuna did, literally, is a noble act that leads to victory. Lord Krishna is saying that He is the effectiveness resulting from Arjuna’s having made this choice.

I am the victory of the determined, and the purity and goodness of the resolute. This tells us that, with resolute determination we will achieve victory, and all that is good and true.

Of the Vrishnis, I am Vasudeva. Of the sons of Pandu, I am the Conqueror of Wealth. Of the munis, I am Vyasa, and of poets, I am Ushana.

Vrishnis. Of the descendants of the Vrishni clan, Krishna is the son of Vasudeva. Vasudeva means ‘indwelling god’ or ‘indwelling divine individual’, the Real Self inside all the packaging. He is saying that His birth as Krishna is the result of what is Real that dwells within. This is consistent with being the avatara of Vishnu (‘all-pervader’), the first divine individual in the Absolute to be self-aware and know Other divine individuals as the same. 

Of the Sons of Pandu. The Pandus, Arjuna’s people, are risker-takers. Not only is getting involved in a war a risk, but it all started with Arjuna’s brother gambling with the enemy and losing everything. Lord Krishna is addressing Arjuna as Dhanañjaya, which means ‘winner of wealth’. He is letting Arjuna know that he can expect success. What this means then, is that we can expect success in this facet of our own practice.

What facet is this? Awakening the sleeping evolutionary force (kundalini) so that we can retake our inheritance as sovereign Self-knowing lords by defeating the enemy represented as the Kurus, the ‘doers’. In other words, we will come to accept ourselves as sovereign non-doing divine individuals, knowing that all action occurs in nature, and what we really is not nature and does nothing.

Of the Munis. A muni is a saint, sage, devotee or hermit, a Brahman (God-person) of the highest order. Krishna is saying that of munis, He is Vyasa.

Now remember that it is Vyasa, the Sage, who is writing this conversation between Krishna (God) and Arjuna (you). Once again he inserts himself into the plot, this time as the greatest of munis, Lord Krishna Himself.

I suspect that there have been many authors called Vyasa (‘compiler and arranger’), but this one has a unique signature: his sense of humor finds it way into the text as he puts himself into the plot. 

Of Poets, Ushana. The keepers of spiritual knowledge were sages who were poets and bards. This not only preserved knowledge, but protected it from corruption. Teachings like this Bhagavad Gita (‘God’s Song’), were preserved in rhythmic verse and meter, making them almost impossible to be tampered with or lost, but easy to remember. These poet-sages were very advanced and enlightened yogis who understood what they were chanting and preserving. Krishna is saying that of these poets he is Ushana, the poet most ‘zealous and impassioned’.

  • Poet (kavi) – “a wise man, sage, seer, prophet, singer, bard” and “insightful, intelligent, knowing, enlightened, wise, sensible, prudent, skillful.”

The other device for preserving teachings was sutras, the use of short phrases, or even single words, which were memorized and used as cues for the remembrance of the associated teachings. One famous example is the Yoga Sutras of the sage Patanjali. Many read these sutras and expect that they are the teachings, but this is not so. They are bell-ringers meant to stimulate the memory of the mysteries they hold, many of which are only orally communicated. Perhaps we will take up the Yoga Sutras once we complete the Bhagavad Gita.

Happiness, Time & the Rest of the Righteous

I am Prahlada of the Daityas, and of counting, I am Time. Of animals I am the lion, and of birds, I am Vainateya.

Alternate translation:
Of the Daityas, I am Prahlada. Of that which pushes forward, I am Time. Of wild animals, I am the King of Beasts. Of birds, I am Vainateya.

Daityas. Of the sons of Diti, the Earth Goddess, I am Prahlada, ‘joy and happiness’.

Time. Of that which pushes forward, I am Time and the advancement of evolution. 

Wild Animals. Of wild animals, I am the king of beasts at the at the top of the food chain, never the prey. The king of something is the master of it. The mastery of the wild, uncontrollable animal (desires of the body) brings about great strength and invulnerability.

Garuda, mount of Vishnu
Garuda-Vaineteya, mount of Vishnu, carries vessels containing amrita, the nectar of immortality.

Birds. Of birds, I am Vainateya, another name of Garuda, the mount of Vishnu that consumes snakes (desires). From vi-natā, ‘humble, modest, and bowing down’, characteristics that Lord Krishna clearly commends. As Vishnu’s mount, this bird is how he gets around—’flying in the sky (khechari mudra)’. 

Garuda consumes snakes (desires). He is very strong and is said to be massive, large enough to block out the sun. Blocking out the sun brings about night and the appearance of the moon, i.e., the moon (apana) takes precedence over the sun (prana).

We have a tendency to appreciate the sun more than the moon, even in Yoga, but here, Lord Krishna adulates the moon instead. Why? It is only when the moon, apana, predominates, that it is possible for there to be a union of prana and apana. This union is the awakening of Kundalini, the evolutionary force within the body. At a later stage of yoga sadhana we can read the moon as soma.

Of purifiers, I am the wind, and of the weapon-bearing, I am Rama. Of sea creatures, I am Makara, and of rivers I am the Daughter of Jahnu.

Alternate translation:
Of purifiers, I am Prana. Of instruments that cut, I am that which brings rest and the pleasant relief of the righteous. Of fish, I am Makara, and I am that from which the Ganges issues.

Rama. The word rama means, ‘causing rest’. He carries a bow and arrow, an instrument that cuts. The root, ram, which means ‘dark’, makes us wonder if there is some kind of mystery hidden here.

Rama is righteous action—the cutting away of desires and freeing apana to ascend with the prana and up-trend the evolutionary force, kundali. Read the story of the marriage of Rama and Sita in the Ramayana, or watch Ingmar Bergman’s 1975 movie of Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute).

Wind is the breath, and the vital air in the body where it is known as Prana, the Life Energy. It is Prana that causes sufficient purification for Kundalini to awaken

(‘Prana’ is a general term for Life Energy in the body and includes both prana and apana.)

This phrase (“Of purifiers, I am the wind”) can also be translated, “Of the swift moving, I am the wind.” The word for “wind” also means ‘northwest’. In the body this is the back of the head, suggesting the back-west path leading to immortality.

Makara is a large sea creature, or sea-monster, often represented as a crocodile (second chakra), and is also associated with Kamadeva, the god of love. Makara is sometimes used as an ornament on gates or on head-dresses. Now that we know that gates are openings, or access points, and that a head-dress would be a reference to the head, we can use our imagination to determine what this represents.

One resource defines Makara as ‘that which harms human beings’. So I took the word apart and got this: ma, “I” + kara, “doing”. In English this is ‘ego’. And  ma + ka + ra = “What am I doing?!” )
