V:14 Continued: Mitigating Negative Influences…

We are not all having the same experience because everyone is in a different place on the Cosmic Map.

The Wisdom Teachings of Surrender Meditation, “In the City of Nine Gates”, Continued

When in the Absolute we became awake to our Selves, realized our existence, and chose to know if there was anything else out there, the world was Created. Or we might say that the reverberation resulting from the act of finding out—the sound, or ‘Word’: OM, amen, amin, etc.—caused this world and the entire cosmos.

If you wonder who ‘looked’ first, and second, etc., you have the general idea for understanding the map. However, in the Absolute there are no limitations, so there is no time or place that we would need to pin this down to a map. The map exists in the Relative realm of our human existence.

The Cosmic Map

Just as a sun in some far-off galaxy has less effect on you than the sun in your own galaxy, the cities closest to you on the Cosmic Map are going to affect you more than other cities in more distant places.

Maps and changes are relative phenomena of nature, so as on any map, changes will occur on the Cosmic Map. These changes are the results of what is happening among Divine Individuals.

It could be argued that our place on the map is the result of our karma, which is certainly true but much misunderstood, and easily overcome through Surrender Meditation. For a significant change on the Cosmic Map, one or more of the population of your city will have to make a choice to unconditionally accept at least one other Divine Individual as equally divine and the same as themself (this is what I meant by “what is happening among divine individuals”).

This is something you can do that will affect other cities, especially those in your neighborhood, and which will come back around to you. Taking this on is a risk-free win-win situation, so why wouldn’t you?

One Individual’s unconditional acceptance of another Individual is what love is all about and why everyone is constantly seeking it. But there is nothing anyone can do to make another Individual choose to accept their own divinity, much less someone else’s. However, because we are already self-aware (or we wouldn’t be here), we can use our power of choice to choose not to continue choosing, and unconditionally accept the divinity and sameness of Others. Put into practice, this is Surrender Meditation. By it, other cities are affected, thereby increasing the odds of improving our own city and our own experience of life.

Surrender Meditation is choosing not to choose and leaving everything up to Absolute God.

The way you are, the things you experience, and the way you experience them, has much to do with where you are in relationship to others on the Cosmic Map—your acceptances of Others (or not), and their acceptances of You and Others (or not).

No matter how these influences affect your life, there is nothing you cannot change (you are a god, after all). If you have a difficult horoscope, for instance, or difficult places within it, there are things you can do to mitigate negative influences. Surrender Meditation is one of these things. Positive thinking is not enough.

There are things you can do to mitigate unwanted effects and influences of other cities that will affect your own city in the best possible way at any given time. All are related to Surrender Meditation in one way or another, but can also be applied independently. Click here to read what they are.

V:14 In the City of Nine Gates…

The Wisdom Teachings of Surrender Meditation, Continued

Mentally renouncing one’s sense of being the doer of actions, the embodied one sits happily as the Master within the city of nine gates, not acting or causing action (13).

14
The Master in the city of nine gates, does not create action, the means of action, or the effects of action, but nature proceeds spontaneously in all this.

“Nature” – Anything other than you that you can be conscious of.
“Fruits” – Results, effects, outcomes.

The Master, the embodied one in the city of nine gates (the body), is the eternal non-doer, the divine individual entity that you really are that is never born and never dies: the Real You.

When you truly renounce the role of the doer of actions—surrender specifically to God and only God (whatever your word is for That)—you are taking a neutral position consistent with the Real You that is indifferent to actions and their effects. This allows for spontaneous actions in meditation (verse 11) to return you to your natural state of happiness.

Citizens of the City

The city is Your realm. All other Divine Individuals make up the population of your city. Each of us, being unlimited in what it is that we truly are, is everywhere in everyone.

The Lord Jesus reveals this when, upon seeing the disciple use his sword against his enemy, to cause him to desist He says, “What you do to the least of these, my brothers, you do to Me.”

“The Whole World is One Family”
— Sanatana Dharma—the way of Eternal Truth

The City Map

The order and arrangement of Divine Individuals on the map of your city is determined by their state of self-awareness and their power of choice in relationship to each other and to You. This arrangement defines your unique characteristics and how you experience things.

Self-awareness – You are aware that you exist.
Power of choice – Your inherent ability to choose.

Let us call the Divine Individual a ‘god’ with all the same characteristics as God. In your city, your body, there is a god of every aspect—every chakra, function, organ, etc. Everyone is present within you, just as you are present in everyone else. This is why what happens with one of us affects all of us, and why what you do affects everyone, including you.

When you surrender to the Absolute in meditation, you are surrendering to one or more Divine Individuals. You are not surrendering to them as beings, but as what they really are: Divine Individuals just like You.

You achieve union with the Absolute by surrendering to the Absolute.

The Absolute

A Divine Individual in the Absolute, before Creation, is either self-aware or not self-aware. One who is self-aware can ‘know’ other Divine Individuals. The choice to know is the choice to employ your inherent ability as a Divine Individual, to be conscious. To be conscious is to ‘know’, perceive, what is other than You. The only thing to know in the Absolute is other Divine Individuals.

One is either self-aware, not self-aware, self-aware and choosing to know, or self-aware and not choosing to know.

If one is self-aware, one can choose to know others or not. These are the only options available to a self-aware individual in the Absolute: to know or not to know. To know or not to know is to be or not to be, for once the choice has been made to know, we have Creation. You have made this choice, and you are here because of it.

The Relative

Once we start talking about life and what we are conscious of, we are dealing with the Relative, not the Absolute. Both are “God”, but God in Its Highest is Absolute. And even though the ability to be conscious is Absolute, consciousness itself is Relative.

In the Absolute, before Creation, there was no awareness of the perfect, blissful Absolute, but now that you are here, self-aware and conscious, when you return you will be aware of It. For now though, you are the Master in a city of nine gates, a body, being human with your own unique characteristics and experiences. If you wonder why you are the way you are as a being in the Relative Realm of life in this world, and why you have the experiences you do, you will find it on your map.

Surrender Meditation

When we make the choice to stop choosing by turning everything over to Absolute God in Surrender Meditation we are paralleling the Truth of Absolute God and our true Selves. This is why Surrender Meditation works so efficiently and effectively.

When we surrender to Absolute God in meditation, we surrender to other Absolute Divine Individuals (not what they are being). We accept these Others as Divine and the same as Us. The more we meditate the better we get at this, and the closer we come to Real Reality. When we accept all Divine Others, we get nirbija samadhi

nirbija samadhi – nirbija (no Others remain unaccepted) + samadhi (equanimous bliss)

“The Master in the city of nine gates, does not create action, the means of action, or the effects of action” describes the Real You. When you abandon the role of the doer of actions, you put yourself in sync with how things really are, and “nature proceeds spontaneously in all this.”

We surrender only to the Absolute.
We never surrender to nature.

V:10-12 The Path of Surrender…

MEDITATION CAN HAPPEN TO YOU

Authentic Yoga Meditation the Easy Way

When you surrender to God in meditation and get out of the way, everything that happens, or doesn’t happen, is in the hands of God. Thus is the path of surrender the path of freedom through meditation.

The Wisdom Teachings of Surrender Meditation

10
Having abandoned attachments and given all actions to God, one who acts is not tainted by evil any more than a lotus leaf is tainted by water.

Evil – guilt, sin, trouble, harm.

The path of surrender is described here once again. Actions that take place during this meditation have no harmful or binding effect on the meditator. The reason for this is that he is out of the picture as the doer of actions because he has surrendered all actions to God.

This takes place in the context of meditation in a private and secured room, and not out in the everyday world or in groups. The reason for this is that actions that occur are for the purpose of self-purification. By keeping surrender in the meditation room, we spare others from encountering any impurities that may arise, and ourselves the inconvenience.

For example, you go into a trancelike state on the bus going to work, and you miss your stop. Or you slip into meditation and your breathing stops and people think you are dead, can’t get a pulse and call the EMTs, and it costs you a fortune. If you ignore what I am telling you and think you can control this, well, maybe so, but then you would not be surrendering, would you? You would be controlling things.

Control – Putting yourself in the driver’s seat in order to get things to be the way you want them to be.

Surrender – Putting God/Truth in the driver’s seat and accepting what happens your in meditation.

11
By abandoning attachments, the body, mind, intelligence and the senses perform the actions of the yogi for the purpose of self-purification.

The body, mind, intelligence and senses become the agents of action in Surrender Meditation. Actions are then spontaneous and under Divine direction.

When the yogi surrenders to God in meditation, he surrenders himself to the Absolute—everything about himself as a being: body, mind, feelings, intelligence, senses and actions. He sets aside all attachments, expectations and preconceived ideas, and surrenders himself fully to God. In this situation he cannot collect any karma even though actions take place, because he is not the actor. He has given up that role, renounced it. Actions then take place freely for the purpose of purification, clearing away everything that sits between the yogi and the final resolution: the joy of union with God.

12.
Yoked to Yoga, having abandoned the fruits of actions, the yogi attains complete peace. But o
ne who is not intent upon Yoga, being attached to the fruits of desire-motivated actions, is bound.

One becomes a yogi by abandoning attachments to actions and their results, and not trying to control things in order to get them to be a certain way.

This verse shows us what it is to be a yogi by showing us what a yogi is not. One who is attached to the results of actions performed for some desired purpose of his own is not a yogi. He will not achieve peace because his intent is not yoga (union), but to get what he wants. This does not mean that trying to get what he wants is bad, but simply that the result of it is bondage rather than peace.

Peace (śānti) – ‘indifference to objects of pleasure and pain’, desirelessness; tranquillity, prosperity, ease, comfort, happiness.

When we read in yoga scriptures that we must become indifferent to pleasure and pain, this is the meaning—it is the objects of pleasure and the objects of pain that we become indifferent to.

For instance, you have a pain in your foot. It is such a terrible pain that you cannot walk. But you walk anyway because you are indifferent to the pain. It is not gone, and it’s not that you aren’t feeling the pain, but you don’t really care. Someone says to you, “Why don’t you do something about it?” and you say, “Oh, I guess I could do that,” and promptly forget all about it. Or in the inimitable way of the uninitiated, someone says to you, “You’re a yogi, why don’t you stop the pain?”, and you realize that this is why you have been able to walk: you have been stopping the pain, but because you were indifferent, you hadn’t tried to make this happen. Your power to mitigate or override pain was the natural result of your indifference.

This is peace, obviously a good place to be. We often imagine things like peace, bliss, or happiness as emotional states resulting from magically having all the challenges life has to offer us gone from our lives, and ourselves as serene saints speaking in short and profound sentences. But this is not the nature of life in this world. We can however, come to a point in our spiritual development in which the way we experience and navigate these challenges is more than some pleasant emotional state and much more real, and the powers that come with it, much more practical.
